Systems Engineer

The Systems Engineer, in coordination with senior technical management and the Network Operations team, is responsible for engineering and administration of internal and client-facing service delivery platforms. The Network Operations team is tasked with scaling and operating the AIS regional network (LA / San Diego / Phoenix), building and managing AIS’s enterprise-grade cloud services platforms, installing and operating internal applications, and providing professional services. The Systems Engineer reports to the Director of Network Operations and is responsible for ensuring mission-critical systems are available at all times.

Key Responsibilities

Primary

  • Develop, install, maintain production servers on multiple OS platforms providing client-facing services including DNS, SMTP, HTTP, and FTP.
  • Develop and deploy network monitoring systems in order to meet SLA requirements for uptime and availability.
  • Develop, test and deploy high-availability and failover solutions
  • Assist and contribute to product development initiatives, focusing on cloud services technologies and related applications.
  • Apply systems administration best-practices and automation to minimize down-time and data loss for all internal and external service delivery systems
  • Provide internal and external client support via phone, email and the TAS ticketing system.
  • Produce systems documentation as needed to meet AIS change management and product development objectives.
Secondary
  • Provide engineering assistance to internal and external clients for assigned projects
  • On Duty Engineer (ODE) duties as required
  • Provide training to internal and external clients as directed
  • Mentor and manage junior engineering staff
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux and Windows OSes
  • Thorough understanding of LAMP technology and internet
  • Software experience with Apache, PHP, sendmail, postfix, LDAP, radius, bind, VMware,
  • Automation via scripting (Perl, Python, Shell)
  • Troubleshooting server hardware and software
  • Host and network security
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Documentation processes and procedures
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Work well independently and with a team
Additional (preferred) Knowledge and Skills:
  • Experience in VMware and other cloud technologies
  • Familiar with service provider networking
  • Experience with common monitoring tools (e.g. mon, nagios, cacti)
